I picked up the Flying Dog brewery 8-pack because I had never tried any of this brand of beer. The 8 pack comes with two of each of the four beers pictured. According to their website, which is well designed and worth visiting at http://www.flyingdogales.com, these four beers are a part of their “Canis Major” line.
Each of the bottles is only 7oz, however given how potent and flavorful each beer is, that’s just about the right size!
The Gonzo Imperial Porter is 8% ABV. It went down very smooth…almost too smooth! I recall a hint of chocolate to it.
The Horn Dog Barley Wine will knock your socks off at 11% alcohol. Don’t let the label fool you though, as it tastes nothing like wine or barley. My friend Sean and I both got a fruity background flavor, however the label talks about hints of licorice and chocolate. Regardless, I’ll definitely be purchasing more of this.
The double-dog pale ale was a typical pale ale. Note that I’ pretty picky when it comes to pale ales (or any really hoppy beer for that matter). With that said, I did enjoy it. What probably does set it apart from your everyday pale ale is that it is 11.5% ABV!
The Kerberos Tripel may have been my first venture into “Tripel”, which I have learned is a Belgian Pilsner (I think?). I wasn’t opposed to the flavor, however I wasn’t blow away either.
All in all, I am excited about finding the Flying Dog brews readily available. From their website it looks like they have a pretty good year-round selection, so I’m excited to try their other variants.
