Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA

Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA
I ran a vote on Twitter this evening to determine what beer I would review next, and this Dogfish Head 90 Minute IPA won! Twitter shout-outs to my beer buddies who voted (smccormack, BeerinBaltimore, beerbabe, twobeerqueers. If you enjoy beer and are on Twitter, follow these folks!

The IPA has a delightful caramel apple smell. There was about an inch and a half of head, and as my wife just said “that beer is clingy”, referring to the lace it’s leaving behind.

The taste starts sweet and slowly rolls over to bitter through the finish. Mild bitterness mind you…nothing overwhelming. The caramel and apple scents are present in the flavor too. Strong grapefruit flavors start to come out as the beer warms, and later dominate the flavor. Bitterness becomes lighter with the warming. YUMMY!

For the other beer-amateurs out there, I asked the “stupid” question: “What is the relevance of the “xx” minutes in the name?”. I went right to the source and asked Dogfish Head via their twitter account. The answer? It refers to how long the brew is boiled, but also refers to the fact that Dogfish head continually adds their hops to the brew throughout the boil. Read more on the Dogfish Head website.

I’ve only had two Dogfish beers, and both have been excellent. I’m definitely adding more of their stuff to my queue.

EDIT: Forgot to mention that this is 9% ABV.

  1. It’s a great beer.

Since you’re getting into the barley wine styles, try Dogfish Head’s Palo Santo Marron and Olde School. The Olde School is mighty potent – 15%!

  2. You cant go wrong with DFH. Eventually, when I leave the cave I live in, I will get on twitter and follow other people. As for now, the blogs will have to keep me sane.

  3. Good review!

I managed to get a bottle of this beer and was SO excited as you they don’t ship to the UK yet (my mate got me a bottle from San Fran). I was so disappointed with it though because it had lost all its freshness despite only being 2 months old. Apparently they lose all the hop freshness really quick and as this is super sweet the malt just overtakes and you just get the shadow of what the hops could and should be – mine was just a dry finish, floral, some grapefruit and I expected huge bitterness. I am desperate to try more of their beers though and really want to get this one fresh.

  4. Yeah it’s legal. We can also buy direct from breweries here. I’m not sure how much postage is. I’ve been trying to see how much it would cost to ship to/from the US too. Any ideas?

  5. Mark:

No idea on price. If you're willing to pay to have it packed & shipped, I could hook you up. USPS.com would be able to give us an estimate. I live in zip code 01581.

Unfortunately I live in a crap-ass state that doesn't allow you to receive beer. I'd have to check to make sure I can send it out.

Let me know what you think.

  6. What kind of place doesn’t allow you to receive beer?!

I’ve had a little look and based on the approx size, weight and value of a box that could hold roughly 12 beers it’d cost around $150! I’m not sure if I did the calculations right as this seems insanely high?! I don’t know… I’m better off saving hard and flying over for a few days, plus I’d get to drink a whole lot more while I was there :)

  7. In slightly insane state. It’s got a lot of good things going for it, so I let it slip. I have relatives in New Hampshire that I could technically get booze shipped to.

Let me take a look at the USPS site today and make some calculations of my own. Where would I be shipping to?

  8. The postcode is ME5 8QE, town is Rochester. I have read and heard from others that shipping works out at an extra $8-$10 per bottle! REALLY expensive which is such a shame. $50 I could justify for 6-10 beers, but any more and it’s just too much (plus it’d make me save harder to get the beers in the US myself!).

  9. Sorry for the delay in getting back to you, busy weekend…

$50 is much more reasonable. Cheers for looking into it for me, I don’t know what I was looking at to get $150?! haha! I might have to take a rain check for now though as I haven’t got much money spare and I’ve got a house full of beer which needs drinking first! :)
