Dogfish Head Raison D’Etre

Dogfish Head Raison D'Etre
Between Twitter and, I’ve heard a lot of positive chatter about Dogfish Head beers. During my last venture to the liquor store I picked up a few different Dogfish Head beers. Tonight’s review is brought to you by my awesome followers on Twitter…I put up a vote to see which beer I would review and the Raison D’Etre won.

The beer is a clear, reddish-brown color. The label says “Mahogany”, however, this Joe-Schmo doesn’t describe colors with words like mauve, salmon, mahogany, etc. Great head, and lace left behind.

Stuck my nose right into the foam to get a good whiff. Is that cinnamon I detect swirling around with the raisin?

This Dogfish is malty throughout with virtually no detectable hoppage. Raisin is the key flavor, however that tricky cinnamon is still hiding in there, Maybe some apple flavor too? It’s a delicious mystery. I just may have to investigate this further, as the 12oz bottle is almost gone as I type!

8% ABV. Smooth. Bubbly! Methinks that the rumors were spot on! Dogfish Head hit a home-run with the Raison D’Etre. I can’t wait to try their other beers!!!

  1. Another little quirk that the DFH people told me. Raison d’etre means “reason for being” (or something like that) in French. Good beer though.

  2. It’s been awhile since I tried this beer, but I remember I thought it was a little too sweet for my taste. I’m not sure I gave it a fair shake though, so I may have to try it again.

  3. Trying this for the first time tonight. It’s delicious. Only my second Dogfish Head I’ve ever had, I now have three in my fridge to try and catch up on this brewery. Good start so far.
