Southern Tier Raspberry Porter

Southern Tier Raspberry Porter
Today was a rough day. All hell breaking loose at work. Nothing going right. The only highlight was waking up at 6:30 to play the new PS3 game I picked up (Dragon Age). Good game so far…wish I had stayed home to play instead of going to work. It’s 10 o’clock now and I should be going to bed. Instead, I’m sitting waiting for my turn on the TV so I can play the game.

While I wait, I’m drinking this lovely Southern Tier Raspberry Porter. When I bought this on Saturday I had totally forgotten that I recently reviewed the Southern Tier Raspberry Wheat.

Quite obviously, the porter is much darker than the wheat variant. Porter has significantly more head. Aroma is similar, which surprised me because I was expecting a deeper and more complex smell from the porter.

The taste of the porter is definitely deeper. Whereas the wheat beer tasted like I was drinking pureed raspberries, the porter tastes like I’m drinking a beer with raspberry flavor. I’m having trouble figuring out what other flavors are there. Maybe the defining factor is that the sweetness/bitterness is much more balanced in the porter.

Both good beers in their own respect. Obviously different characters. If I were to come up with a complaint with the porter, it would be that the beer had the opportunity to be a little more unique. Maybe some coffee or chocolate flavors to go with the raspberry would have jazzed things up a little more.
