Dogfish Head Chicory Stout

Dogfish Head Chicory StoutFriday night. Thank God. This week didn’t feel long, but today definitely did. I spent 6-7 hours doing homework today. It was a good thing that work was slow and they don’t mind when I do school work there. The evening started off real lousy with a dinner out which resulted in a BAAAAAAD piece of tuna. No sure why we keep trying these hotel-lobby restaurants.

I’m going to make up for a crap-ass dinner by drinking this Dogfish Head Chicory Stout. DFH never lets me down. Just looking at the pour, I’m giddy with excitement. It’s a deep black color. The foamies hang around for ages. I’d love to time this to see how long it lasts, but I’m damn thirsty!

I’m gonna be upfront here and tell you that up until 5 seconds ago, I didn’t have the foggiest clue what chicory even is. According to the all-powerful wikipedia, it’s an herb that is used as a coffee substitute.

If this beer is supposed to taste like coffee, they hit it on the head. The taste is quite intense. The coffee flavor is bitter, and is evened out by a strong sweet vanilla. As the beer warms it actually seems like it’s getting more flavorful. There is no way I would ever be drinking more than one of these in a sitting. Not because it isn’t delicious…quite the opposite. This is the kind of brew you want to sip and savor due to its complexity.

As a final note, I’ll mention that I’m surprised that this is only 5.6% ABV. Another excellent beer straight from the Head of a Dogfish.Dogfish Head Chicory Stout
