Ommegang Abbey Ale

Ommegang Abbey AleFollowing an evening out consisting of sushi and two pints of Sapporo I was going to just chill out. That meant watching this movie (The Spirit) with the wife (no brew-review). I logged onto Twitter to see my twitter beer-bud @Sweet__T urging me on, saying “Keep up beer reviews!”. Awww crap…must review!!!

Ommegang Abbey AleIt wasn’t my fault. I swear. The bottle was a gusher. In fact, the label states “pour slowly as to not disturb the yeast sediment”. I thought I was pouring carefully enough, but I definitely pissed off the yeast.

This is my first Ommegang brew. This brewery is out of New York. The beer is a Belgian style dubbel. 8.5% ABV.

The aroma is super spicy. The flavor is much different. Cherry and yeast are the two big flavors. The booze really comes though in the aftertaste. I get that lingering warming sensation coming from my belly. I normally only get this sensation from the occasional dessert wine.

Funny that I haven’t had a cherry flavored beer in months and by chance I end up reviewing two of them on back to back nights. The Ommegang Abbey Ale is just OK for me. As I mentioned last night, cherry often reminds me of cough syrup. Due to how much liquor I’m tasting, this brew is falling into the medicinal category.

  1. Abbey Ale is not actually a cherry beer. The style is a belgian dubbel so there will be dark fruit but there really should not have been that much cherry. It is possible that your bottle was bad.

    Ommegang might be my favorite brewery in New York (which is saying something) so I would encourage you to give this beer and their others a second shot. You can check out how I have rated all of their beers here.
