I like your style. Serious but not too serious. You enjoy a good beer but don't get hung up on proper everything. I found this while doing a search on Chimay; I want to try the line-up. Your blog inspired me, maybe tonight will be the night! :)

Of all the Trappists, Chimay is the most popular, but also the most overrated, IMO. Orval is hands down my favorite. Konigshoeven is excellent and very underrated.

I've had the Red and Blue, and thought the red was way more yeasty, and the Blue had almost a floral quality to it. They are both great, but my personal favorite is the blue. One of these days I'll try the tripel.

That's pretty funny actually. BA used to have a nice cheaper set of glassware you could buy that had like 5 or 6 different glasses for something like $35-50. Now they just have the uber expensive set of 3 for $75. They're nice but too expensive for everyday use, IMO.

I use a Crate & Barrel snifter for pretty much all the bigger beers. Also, if you go to beer events, like tastings and such, you can often get free giveaways. I got a free Victory Golden Monkey glass for buying 2 6 packs of Victory after a tasting last night.

We don't drink red wine, so all we have are the smaller white wine glasses.

April 24th

I actually WOULD have had proper glassware if things had played out differently. The week after I bought the Chimay, Julio's got in stock those boxed sets of Red/White/Blue with the signature Chimay glasses.

Fate clearly wants me to keep drinking out of "inappropriate" glassware.

-Lost

OK, now you really need to get more glassware. When's your birthday? Tell your wife that's what you want. I don't care how douchey I sound, but Trappist beers really should be had in proper glassware, which is either a tulip glass or a goblet. However, a big red wine glass or a nice snifter will easily do the trick. Surely, you must have at least a wine glass. :)

Nice review.

I actually picked up a bottle of the Trippel for this weekend. My wife wanted something special to drink while some friends and I homebrew, so I got her a liter of this or whatever size it happens to be. Its a pretty large bottle.

I've found the more I drink and try trippel the more I like these as "treat" beers. Something to drink as a dessert or when I want something sweet, but not a chocolate or malty stout.

Do you watch football and watching the Superbowl? I've got a post on my site about session beers that I'd love to hear your take on if you get a chance.

Have a good one man!

Mike
Mike's Brew Review
