Harpoon Leviathan Saison Royale

Happy Cinco De Mayo everyone! How did you celebrate today? The wife and I made some bean burritos and Mexican rice. I didn’t have any Mexican beer, so I had a Samuel Adams Blackberry Wit. Real festive, I know. Now I’m watching the Bruins game and trying out this 9% ABV Harpoon Leviathan Saison Royale.

When I first poured, I knew I ‘dun’ screwed up. Massive amounts of head ensued. Did I piss off some yeast or something? No matter…it made for an awesome aroma coming from the glass. Lots of bready smell. Citrus and banana are what my nose picks up.

Upon first sip, I’m a bit taken back. This is a STRONG tasting beer. Not what I expected from a saison. Normally I’m thinking easy-drinking, yet full flavored, sweet(ish) type beer. The spiciness is what’s assaulting my senses. I can’t even tell what the spices are. Maybe coriander? Maybe even nutmeg? Call me clueless.

The aftertaste is remarkably drawn out. Slightly hoppy, but mostly lemony. Overall, I’m not a huge fan. That said, I have very little experience with saisons.

What’s the best saison you’ve ever had? What would you recommend?

  1. As the others said, Saison Dupont is like the standard for saisons. They also have an organic one. I'm not a huge fan of Hennepin.

Whatever you do, don't use the Saison Royale as your basis for saisons. It's kind of a different breed.

With regard to the spices, I am pretty sure most saisons get their spiciness from the hops versus being loaded with spices.

  2. Ooh I think I've had that one and liked it.
So Josh, I drank the strawberry beer this past weekend (and shared it with my in-laws so I have their opinions as well) but I thought the beer was off. I'm going to buy another bottle for a more thorough review. I promise to send you something soon. :)

  3. Elina:

Still looking forward to your review! Next time we hang out I'll be sure to give you a hard time about stalling. :)

  4. Since Saisons is a "farmhouse" ale there can be a LOT of differences from producer to producer. I agree on the Dupont they're famous for a reason

  5. I change my favorite saison… Went to an Ithaca tasting tonight. Groundbreak is their saison and it's awesome. I bought a 6 pack of it because it was so good (I don't normally buy 6 packs).
