My weekend: Amstel Light, Barleydog Blueberry, Narragansett Lager, Hoegaarden

Amstel LightThis past weekend was incredibly busy. We really had every minute of it planned out. It included beers, friends, family, and food. The weather was just ridiculously nice. Couldn’t have been a better weekend.

We kicked it off right with dinner at our friend’s Sean & Kerry’s place. They made us homemade Indian food and we played the card game skat.

Blue Moon

We were rocking canned beer on Friday. Sean sipped on the Blue Moon and I dove into some Amstel. Yes, Amstel. It’s so damn smooth and malty…love that stuff.

I also tried some of Sean & Kerry’s latest home brew: Barleydog Blueberry. As far as blueberry beers, I feel that there are two extremes: Sea Dog Blueberry (sweet, muffin flavor) and Wachusett (bitter, unripe berries). This homebrew, while not quite as good as Seadog, was quite good. Wheaty. Smooth, sweet, malty, lingering aftertaste.

Mr. Barley (pictured below) is the inspiration for naming their homebrew “Barleydog”.

And while we are showing beasties, here is my wife holding their kitten Nutmeg.

Melissa's Plating

I forced my wife and Sean to have a food-plating contest. Below is Sean’s entry. Above is Melissa’s. In your opinion, who won?

Hoegaarden

Saturday we spent the day at a friend’s 2-year old son’s B-day party. No pictures to post to the blog, as it basically consisted of a bunch of little kids tearing around.

We got Saturday evening going by having our friends Kevin and Emily over for dinner. My wife made a burrito pie and corn salad.

I picked up a six-pack of Hoegaarden and another six of Narragansett Lager. I’ve had Hoegaarden many times, and in fact used to hate it. Times have changed. Friggin delicious on a hot summer day. Up until this weekend I had never tried Narragansett. I felt like as a New England native it was my duty to ensure this trend did not continue. The stuff is pretty good for an inexpensive lager. It has this creamy aftertaste that I was digging.

Kevin & I played some ladder golf while the ladies chatted and made dinner. I truly suck at this game and Kevin crushed me.

After dinner we played this card game called Dominion. Despite looking INCREDIBLY nerdy, it’s a pretty straight-forward game and is a ton of fun.

On Sunday we went to the in-laws and spent the day in the pool. Actually, I was a tad hungover and was anti-social. While others were in the pool I hung out on the deck with my laptop, working on the beer collage.

Quite a weekend if I do say so myself. You can see the toll it took on our dog Brady who buried himself in the couch cushions and passed-out! :)
