J.W. Lees Harvest (Lagavulin Whisky Cask)

Time to make up for some lost review time earlier this week due to the cold. I recently picked up this J.W. Lees Harvest beer. Expensive as I recall…maybe $10 or 12 oz? I’m thoroughly excited to try it. I should note that someone WAAAAY back last year recommended that I try the beer.

The stuff is 11.5% booze and it smells that way! Besides alcohol, I detect dark fruit (raisin or plum??) in the scent.

Upon sip #1 I’m completely and utterly confused. NOT what I was expecting. Smokey!! Completely and utterly complex…far beyond my tongue’s capabilities. Wood flavors, sweetness swirling around in there, but first and foremost massive smoke flavor.

I’m not going to lie…I was hoping for vanilla / oak flavors. I’m not a smokey beer kind of guy. That said, I haven’t tried a lot of them. I’m having doubts that I’ll be able to finish this one.

Generally a let down. If you’re into smokey beers, give this one a go. If not, stay far away.
