Spaten Optimator

Spaten Optimator

Last night was poker night. I came out even on the night (minus $5 for pizza), so all was good. Besides hanging with the guys and shooting the shit, one thing I love about poker night at my house is the leftover beer. I made out like a bandit last night, filling the crisper with adult beverages.

Spaten Optimator

One of the beers left behind was Spaten Optimator. I have never had the beer, so I thought it was perfect review fodder for this evening.

The brew is a doppelbock, which frankly I had to look up a definition for. The answer: malty, dark, and relatively high ABV. Based on that definition, the Optimator is spot-on. First off, it’s 7.2% ABV. Most importantly, it’s uber malty. I actually can’t pick out the exact flavors I’m picking up, but they are 100% sweet. At first I thought honey, but I’m backing off that and just settling with “malty”.

It’s a funky little brew. I’m on the fence as to whether or not I like it.

  1. I love this beer! I first had it at EPCOT, in the Germany pavilion years ago and fell in love with the rich, malty flavor. This beer, Sam Lager, and Dogfish Head’s Raison D’Etre are three of my staples commonly found in my fridge. Given your love of sweet beers, I’m surprised you weren’t sold on this one.
