Dogfish Head Theobroma

Tonight’s review is a carryover from the other night when Michelle came by to review beer with me. I love reviewing beer with her because she gets really excited to try new stuff and she knows relatively little about beer, which grounds me.

The beer of choice is this Dogfish Head Theobroma. The beer was a birthday gift from my buddy Joel and his girlfriend Kate.

This beer was SUPPOSED to be guest reviewed by my friends Sean & Kerry. They drank the stuff about 8 weeks ago and emailed me telling me a guest review was imminent…year right. I love Sean and Kerry, but their guest reviews never come through.

Anyhow, on to the review. Frankly, neither Michelle or I were a fan of the brew.

Michelle thought that it smelled like chocolate and finished with a chili flavor. Overall she thought it was far too complex, and not enjoyable, and I quote “meh”.

For me (and remember that I’m a sweet beer kinda guy) the beer was way too sweet. Dogfish Head definitely hit the flavor they were aiming for as it tasted like chocolate with chili pepper added…something I’ve had many times before. The chocolate is like sweet milk chocolate. Had it been more of a dark bitter chocolate, the beer would have balanced out better.

  1. This is disappointing. I am looking for a beer that tastes good and will actually give me a hot kick. Kinda like the first time I had a jalapeno stuffed martini with Absolut Peppar. I’m hoping that the Billy’s Chilies i want to find in Florida will do. Let me know if you find one that fits my criteria.
