After finding some motivation on this lazy Sunday I decided to review some beer. The selection tonight is Nøgne Ø Dark Horizon 3, a birthday gift from back in April. I believe this came from my friend Adam. I had been eyeballing this beer at the liquor store just prior to my birthday but declined to buy it since it was either $15 or $20 for am 8oz bottle! Many thanks to Adam for giving this to me. The review shouldn’t have waited this long!
The beer is wrapped like a present. A big, boozy, 15.5% ABV present. High marks to Nøgne Ø for presentation.
The pour was creepily non-carbonated. That, combined with an aroma of dark fruit, got me really worried. Was 8 weeks in the fridge too long? Did the beer go bad? DAMN, that would suck.
A quick googling revealed that everyone says that the beer has no head and a number of people call out dark fruit as the prominent aroma and flavor. Strange since the main ingredient in the beer is coffee!
This is one big & bad mother Fer. The booze flavors can’t be masked. Some chocolate and coffee flavors are obvious, however the dark fruit (raisin mainly) overrules everything else. This is a wicked sweet beer…maybe too much for even me! I wish I had a friend to share this with.
No carbonation to speak of. Normally a HUGE beer like this with no carbonation would be syrupy – not in this case.
Boy, I’m glad I got this one as a gift (thanks Adam!). It’s a crazy-unique beer and I enjoyed trying it. At this price point I wouldn’t buy this specific beer again, however I’m very interested in trying other beers from Nøgne Ø as I believe there is a series of these Horizon beers.
