Reinaert Flemish Wild Ale

Reinaert Flemish Wild Ale

Tonight I’m drinking my second to last review beer from the fridge. Sad on one hand, but on the other…a beer run is imminent! Nothing terribly exciting going on this evening. Watched the movie Bridesmaids – hilarious. Now watching the Bruins play Montreal. A huge rivalry, very physical game.

In my glass is this Reinaert Flemish Wild Ale. I noticed two strange things about this beer as I poured it. #1: It has a light, cloudy color that reminds me of a wheat beer. #2: It is FULL of yeast chunks. Luckily, chunks don’t bother me.

Checking out the bottle, I’m realizing that this is a 9% ABV brew. I have no idea how the ABV is that high. The brew tastes light and bubbly. It’s relatively sweet for sour beer, so I’m sure the sugar is hiding the booze.

This sour is different from others I’ve tried. It doesn’t taste “Belgiany” and the most notable characteristic is the ridiculous carbonation level. Good stuff.

Wild ales aren’t necessarily “sour” though they’re often lumped in with the sour beers. They’re usually more “funky”. Not really tart or mouth puckering, but having a funk to them that tastes what many describe as “horse blanket” or “barnyard”. The difference is the yeast that’s used (or acquired from the air in the case of lambics).
