Rodenbach Grand Cru

Virgil's Cream Soda

Tonight turned out WAY different from how I planned it. I went into work a little early with the plan of getting out early and going for a nice run. The weather was sweet today – 60 degrees and not a cloud in the sky. Perfect fall running weather. After running, I planned on playing some Rock Band, drinking some beer, and then watching the opening game of the Boston Bruins’ season.

What do they say about the best laid plans?

Whitney and Melissa

I came home early, that part was spot on. However, when I got home I found out that I was driving my wife into Boston to meet with another blogger for dinner. After spending over an hour in traffic, we arrived at our destination – Peace o’ Pie in Allston. I promptly sat down with a slice of pizza and a bottle of Virgil’s Cream Soda. I drink soda maybe once a month and I’m a sucker for cream soda.

We met Whitney from Eco Vegan Gal and hung out for a long time chatting it up. Eric Prescott, president of Peace o’ Pie and Whitney’s sister Mary joined us as well. We had a good time and Melissa got to meet a popular blogger she follows, which is always cool.

Deep Ellum Menu

Afterward we hit up Deep Ellum, which is only a couple doors down from the pizza joint. There was no room inside so we sat on the deck. By this time it was getting chilly out (low 50s). Let’s just say we rushed through our drinks a bit. 🙂

I had the Rodenbach Grand Cru, a barrel aged flander’s red/brown. Walking into Ellum I was craving a sour beer, so I thought this would be perfect!

Frankly, I was underwhelmed by the Grand Cru. It had one thing going for it – it was really drinkable. Too much so for my liking. It lacked character and was tart, but very moderately so. So sad.

Tomorrow I have an identical plan to the one I started with tonight. What do you think the chances are that things play out more to plan tomorrow?
