10 long hours at work followed by an hour long drive to class, followed by 2 hours of class. That has been my day. An I am COMPLETELY spent. It was all I could do to bring myself to reviewing a beer tonight. Tomorrow is going to even worse at work; I have meetings scheduled from 8:30am until 4:30pm with only a 30 minute break around 2:00. I have no idea when I’ll be able to eat!
Let’s not get ahead of ourselves though. Tomorrow is another day. For now, it’s time to unwind with a giant mug of Cucapa Lowrider Ale.
The aforementioned giant mug was a groomsman’s gift given to me by my buddy Kevin earlier this fall. This is the first time I’ve used the mug. My only complaint? The thing weighs a ton without liquid in it. Add 750ml of beer and drinking is akin to lifting weights!
The Lowrider Ale is a rye beer. The last (and possibly only) rye beer I reviewed was Sixpoint Righteous Ale. I mention this to point out I have virtually zero experience with the style. I think I made the same disclaimer when reviewing the Sixpoint.
Lowrider has a red hue to it. It had very little head, despite a vigorous pour. Crappy head aside, it’s delicious looking. In terms of flavor, it’s mild and well balanced. I get citrus and floral hoppiness which melts into malty sweetness, only to finish with a distinct bitter after taste.
Despite my lack of rye experience, I feel like the beer tastes the way it “should”. It’s light, drinkable, yet full of flavor. I should also mention that I love the Cucapa Brewery. I highly recommend you try this or any of the other beers they make.
