Last night I had the pleasure of trying a very special beer – Scaldis Prestige de Nuits. This bottle of beer runs about $40 and is intended to be aged. My bottle was just short of two years old and was given to me by a friend. I had been hanging onto the bottle for months waiting for the right opportunity to try it.
Last night we had plans to go into Boston to see our friends Adam and Elina. I wanted to bring a beer to share with Adam, but wasn’t sure what to bring…until I realized the Scaldis Prestige de Nuits would be perfect!
This is a BIG beer; 13% ABV to be specific. I had to share this with someone, as I had no prayer of drinking the entire bottle myself.
It smelled seriously of oak, a quite delicious aroma. Adam called out the fact that the brew was swimming with yeast, and man was he right! These floaties hung in mid-suspension rather than falling to the bottom of the beer.
The beer was a sweet SOB, with caramel maltiness throughout. For being a Belgian, it wasn’t terribly spicy. The 13% ABV was very well masked, and it didn’t taste like more than 8-9%. On a final note, as the beer warmed it got mega smooth.
In the end, both Adam and I agreed that this didn’t taste like a $40 beer. It was delicious for sure, but we would never pay $40 ourselves.
