Boulevard Brewing Double Wide IPA

Tonight I’m posting a guest review from my buddy Brandon. He’s reviewing a beer from Boulevard Brewing, which recently started getting distributed in MA. I’ve been meaning to pick up some of their stuff, so this will be an interesting first-look into one of their offerings. Brandon….

I’ll keep this one short and sweet.

Winding down another busy week, I decided to crack open a beer that’s been sitting in my fridge for a couple weeks. A brewery that I don’t know anything about, besides the fact they just started distributing here. Tonight’s beer is one from the “Smokestack Series” of Boulevard Brewing, Double-Wide India Pale Ale. Boulevard Brewing is out of Kansas City, MO. This is definitely my first Missouri brewed beer.

Folks, I’m cheap. I don’t like to spend more than $10 on a 22 oz. bottle of beer. But I saw this one (amongst others from Boulevard) on a shelf at the packie down the road, and I just had to buy it. I bought it for the love of the label on this beer. All of the artwork on the bottles caught my eye. I was quite impressed to find out that Boulevard employs their own label artist.

This beer is bottle conditioned, which makes it a bit cloudy in the pint glass. The color of this beer is burnt amber/orange. It pours a 1 finger, off-white head. It leaves a beautiful lacing on the glass.

The smell of this beer is pleasant, like that of any great IPA. I’m getting a sweeter hops smell though, one of orange peel & lemongrass. It’s mild. I’m surprised I don’t smell any alcohol, being it is an 8.5% ABV IPA.

As for flavor, it provides a nice citrusy/piney flavor mixed with lemongrass. It has a decent bitterness, but nothing overboard. I am getting a strong alcoholic after taste (which I welcome after this week!). That can only be attributed to the ABV of this beer.
Overall, I’m very impressed. I’ll be looking or more of Boulevard’s offerings, even if the price is a little steeper than I would like to dish out. These bottles are big though, coming in at 1 pint, 9.4 ounces (a bit bigger than your typical bomber). Go find some today!
