Slumbrew My Better Half and Wormtown Be Hoppy

Slumbrew my Better Half

On Saturday night we had some people over to watch the UFC 144 fights. It was a VERY impressive card and proved to be excellent entertainment. While the beer was flowing, I took the chance to review a couple.

The first beer was one that Norm shared with me. Slumbrew My Better Half is an Imperial Cream Stout…the first beer I’ve ever had in the style. In the process of reviewing it, I learned that cream ale is a mix of lager and ale. This beer didn’t hit the spot for me. I found it too bitter for my liking. The fact that it was “imperialized” didn’t add much to the beer.

The second beer I tried was an American IPA, Wormtown Be Hoppy. I have been thinking that I REALLY need to review more Wormtown stuff. The brewery is right in my back yard and their head brewer Ben is a great guy.

While I have been googly-eyed over other Wormtown beers (e.g. Sweet Tats), Be Hoppy didn’t do it for me. The hops were super floral, which smelled great, but didn’t work with my pallet. The flavors finish more piney than floral and make for a hop-head’s dream come true. For me, I need just a little more balance.

Neither beer really rang my bell Saturday, but that’s OK. Neither beer was bad, and we had great company and great entertainment!
