Tonight I’m having friends over to watch UFC. I WILL be drinking copious amounts of craft beer, however you won’t hear about it tonight. Instead, Greg hooked me up with a guest review for you. I will take this opportunity to make Greg feel guilty for not coming over the last 4 times I invited him. Just kidding Greg. Love you long time. Take it away….
We have some snow coming down right now which is as good a reason as any to crack open a beer. Tonight I have the Three Heads Loopy which is labeled as an oatmeal red ale. Speaking of the label, who doesn’t like elephants riding arrows over googly eyed hops? The oatmeal red pours a deep amber color but not quite as dark as I was expecting. The oatmeal precursor had me expecting some more akin to a stout. The Loopy has a nice coffee colored one finger head. The nose is citrusy grapefruit and piney hops. The first sip reassures me that this is indeed not a stout. Lots of hops up front followed by some earthy tones and bitterness. There are a whole lot of flavors going on with this beer and I am not sure my tongue can do it justice.
On top of the flavors, the Loopy has a great mouth feel. About halfway through the flavor I get an oily feeling on my tongue that hangs around until the bitter finish. The Loopy leaves fabulous lacing on the glass that seems to hang around forever. This is a very tasty beer and at 6.6 % it is very drinkable. With lots of hops and bitterness, be prepared.
