Jack’s Abby Cascadian Schwarzbier

Tonight I had to make a beer run (Julio’s Liquors as usual). I ended up picking up a mixed six-pack of all local stuff – Blatant Brewing, Jack’s Abbey, and Peak Organic. They were all beers I was looking forward to trying, and better yet, they were all relatively inexpensive.

As such, tonight I’m drinking Jack’s Abbey Cascadian Schwarzbier. This beer is an interesting style and brings a mix of flavors that might surprise you. The label says it’s a “hoppy black lager”, so I’m kinda expecting black IPA-ish flavors.

In the aroma department I pick up citrus, thus far confirming my expectations. Flavor-wise, this brings an interesting twist. I get citrusy hops and a solid bitter roasted backbone. The after-taste throws a curveball with a heavy nutty/roasted flavor, more or less completely washing out the hops. The Cascadian Schwarzbier is a decent beer: easy to drink and fairly complex. I probably wouldn’t buy another bottle of it, although I’d love to try it on tap!

  1. I was in Boston a couple weeks ago and ate at a bar that had this on tap. I was impressed. They had it listed as just Schwarzbier. I thought it was going to be a standard black lager. I was surprised by the hoppiness. When I checked in on Untappd, I noticed the name of it. It explained quite a bit… I really enjoyed it.
