New Belgium Prickly Passion Saison

New Belgium Prickly Passion Saison

I may be sitting outside DC as I type up my weekly review, but my mind is definitely in the Boston metro area, as Josh and the New England contingent of LIBA nation celebrate at today’s craft beer meetup. I’m definitely envious of all the good times and tasty brews being enjoyed right now, and can’t wait for the recap!

Regardless, I’m having a little craft beer meetup of my own. A few weeks back, I reviewed New Belgium’s Biere De Mars, a sweet citrusy brew from their “Lips of Faith” series. This week, I’m enjoying a second beer from the series, New Belgium’s Prickly Passion Saison.

This is a great saison, with a unique fruity backbone. It poured out a slightly cloudy, golden color with a decent foam crown. I didn’t pick up much from the aroma, just some non-distinct melon notes.

Taste-wise, all I can say is yum. The Prickly Passion combines the spicy saison fundamentals very well with a sweet and sour fruit flavor. I’m not the world’s expert on prickly pear, but to me the brew tasted like a combination of bananas and cantelope. Through the middle and into the end, the saison spiciness comes out to play, with tons of coriander flavor.

Overall, this is a great brew. Coriander and fruit combine smoothly, and the 8.5% ABV packs a little punch. I’d definitely have more than one of these at a sitting, and recommend picking up a bomber if you come across it.
