Tonight’s beer is Southern Tier Live which is a bottle conditioned pale ale. I picked it up a couple of weeks ago at Julio’s and it got lost in the back of the beer fridge. Tonight is the night that I drink it though! The bottle says it is brewed with 4 types of malt and 4 types of hops, not sure what that means but I’m about to find out!
The beer pours a slightly hazy copper color with an off white head. Lots of hops on the nose. Smells like an IPA; I get a lot of floral notes and grapefruit.
The taste is quite different though and I am slightly confused by the lack of upfront hops. First up I get some great malt with a little bit of sweetness. The only thing I can think to compare it to is toffee. After the initial malt, the hops follow through with moderate citrus and floral flavors. The Live is a very balanced beer and it is very drinkable at 5.5% abv. It has a little bit of an effervescent mouth feel and a satisfying slightly drying finish. This is a new beer for Southern Tier and hopefully they continue to make it.
