I’ve been feeling a bit rusty at beer reviewing. For a number of days I let my wife take the stage and review ciders. I bet there have been more cider reviews here in December than beer reviews! Tonight I’m getting things back on track with a bottle of Jack’s Abby Numb Swagger. Now, with the holidays approaching and travel plans in my future, I can’t promise I’ll stay on top of things, but I’ll do my best.
The Numb Swagger is a Rauchbier by style and is 5.8% ABV. It pours a deep dark brown color. On the tongue it has a medium body and minimal carbonation.
If you’re familiar with rauchbier’s and you’re looking for a potent one, you would be barking up the wrong tree. There are indeed some hickory/campfire flavors, however they are tempered by strong malts and a hint of spice. The spice is quite a curveball and, despite not expecting it, I dig the uniqueness it adds to the beer.
If you’re new to the style, or want a nice mild smokey flavor in a dark beer, this is the route to go! I personally dislike rauchbiers, but enjoy this one given how unimposing the flavors are.
