T-minus three weeks until my long-overdue Boston vacation, complete with Beerfest and a LIBA meetup, and I couldn’t be more psyched! Josh is still finalizing details, but count on somewhere downtown Sunday afternoon on March 23rd. If you’re in the area, hope you can make it out, because I want to meet as much of LIBA Nation as possible!
Okay, solicitation over – onto this week’s review. I’ve expressed my love for hoppy beers more times than teenage girls swoon over Justin Beiber, but I’ve also got a soft spot on my palate for spicy or herbed beers. Usually I’ll go for a nice tripel, but when I saw Bison Brewing’s Organic Honey Basil, I was intrigued.
As you may have guessed, it’s brewed with honey and basil, the two flavors that unsurprisingly dominate this beer’s aroma. It pours out a hazy dark copper color, with virtually no foam crown, which is a bit surprising considering the steady stream of small bubble rising from the bottom of my glass.
Tastewise, this is definitely a unique and delicious brew! It starts out with honey sweetness and a hint of citrus up front, gets hoppy with tons of basil notes through the middle, and closes on a bittersweet honey end note. Even though there’s several heavy flavors in this beer, it’s super crisp and very drinkable with minimal mouthfeel. Honestly, this reminds me more of herbal tea than a beer!
I’d definitely recommend picking up a sixer of this brew, and bet it’s crazy good during a hot summer day!
