Newburyport Green Head

Newburyport Green Head

Tomorrow my wife leaves for Los Angeles. It will be the first time she has taken a trip without me in a VERY long time. I can’t remember the last time we will have spent this many days apart. Don’t tell her, but I really like her company and I’m going to miss her terribly. I’m making the most of 5 days as a bachelor with golf, a trip to the casino, hanging with friends and plenty of time spent eating cold cereal in my boxers. I have a couple of nights with no plans, so if you’re in the Boston area and want to keep me company, give me a shout.

Tonight’s beer is my first ever brew from Newburyport Brewing. They are one of the fastest growing craft breweries in the country, moving quickly from start-up mode to mass production to the tune of 5000 barrels by the end of their first year in business! They are distributing all over Massachusetts in the 12-ounce canned format. The beer in hand is Green Head IPA.

Green Head IPA’s label says “The Beer That Bites You Back”. Boy, they are kidding! If you’re looking for a mouth-puckering, palette-destroying American IPA, this might be for you. The hops are oppressive and astringent. I get pine flavors all the way. It’s reminiscent of getting to third base with a pine tree. Even half way into the can, my taste buds still haven’t adjusted. This one is a bit too much for me, but I’m sure there are a ton of hop heads out there that would love this.

I haven’t had a Torpedo in some time, so I can’t compare. It’s definitely as strong as other West Coast IPAs I’ve had.
