Allagash Neddles

Happy Memorial Day, ya’ll. I hope you have had a wonderful long weekend. Here in New England it was GORGEOUS all three days. Although, besides having the windows open and enjoying the breeze, I have to say I did very little with the nice weather. It was a very low key holiday for us. We had brunch with friends, game night with friends, packed for the move, ran some errands and took the dog for a long walk. Besides that, we sat on the couch watching movies all weekend.

Right now I’m watching Aliens while Melissa takes a nap. I’ve watched Alien and Aliens at least 2 times each this month. Great movies that stand the test of time. The director, James Cameron, is a movie God in my mind.

I’m also drinking bottle of Allagash Neddles. The beer, a birthday gift from our friends Sean and Kerry, is an American wild ale style. It’s 10.5% ABV and luckily it’s only a 12 ounce bottle.

I’m not sure I could drink more than 10-12 ounces anyway. And not because of the alcohol content. Rather, this sucker is SOUR. I mean, intensely sour. It doesn’t quite taste like vinegar, but I could see someone less experienced with sour beers thinking otherwise. Neddles is aged in rum barrels and upon opening the bottle, tons of rum aroma was in the air. If there is any oak or rum flavor in the beer, it is masked by all the sour flavor. Now, the beer was bottled nearly six months ago, and I believe it was bottle conditioned (active yeast in the bottle). Given that, I suppose it’s possible that the longer this sat, the more sour it got? Regardless, it is what it is, and I’m not sure I’ll be finishing the bottle tonight.
